Secretariat Festival 2013
2013 BOURBON COUNTY SECRETARIAT FESTIVAL
The weekend of September 20-21 marks the dates for the 2013 renewal of the Secretariat Bourbon County Festival. The third weekend in September lends a picture-perfect autumn backdrop to the 6th Annual Bourbon County Secretariat Festival in historic Paris, Kentucky, honoring Central Kentucky’s most famous equine resident. The Secretariat Festival showcases the 1973 Triple Crown Winner as well as the Commonwealth’s pride in its Bluegrass heritage.
Since its inaugural event in 2008, the Festival has grown in attendance, activities, and performances, which now encompass two days of scheduled events attracting horse fans of all ages.
This year’s spectacular festival begins Friday, Sept. 20 with the world premiere release of the new Landlocked Films documentary, Penny & Red: the Life of Secretariat’s Owner to be debuted in the ever-so-appropriate venue of the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in heart of horse country just outside of Lexington. Come meet the filmmakers and title star Penny Chenery, as well as the rest of the Meadow team: jockey Ron Turcotte, exercise rider Charlie Davis, and master of ceremonies author Bill Nack and enjoy this unforgettable evening celebrating the life of the “First Lady of Racing.”
Friday also offers the festivities of the Paris Artwalk – a community gathering of over 100 artists in the streets of downtown Paris, to be followed by the Artwalk After-Party and bourbon tasting presented by Four Roses distillery beginning at 8:30 pm.
On Saturday, Sept. 21st, the Festival hits full stride when fans and families travel to Paris from across the country far and wide to celebrate Secretariat’s legend and legacy. For those who enjoy stretching their legs, the early morning brings the 5K Big Red Run/Walk at neighboring Adena Springs Farm. The bucolic course on this renowned breeding farm will take participants of all ages through the rolling bluegrass fields in the heart of horse country. Beginning at 9:30 am., Claiborne Farm graciously partners with the Festival to schedule tours of their historic horse farm where Big Red spent the majority of his life and is now buried in his hallowed grave.
Visitors enjoying the Festival’s main activities at the Bourbon County Fairgrounds can expect a constant buzz of excitement and entertainment throughout the day – displaying the talents of both human and horse. Three arenas allow for festival goers to enjoy various equestrian demonstrations and disciplines, parading of former equine athletes and star retirees, and many more equine-related events.
The Festival’s many diverse vendors feature a wide variety of artists and retailers who bring an assortment of all things Secretariat and other equine and Kentucky themed products to the gathering. Other favorite staples of the Festival include an amazing silent auction of racing memorabilia from the Secretariat archive collection, live bluegrass entertainment, sampling of Kentucky cuisine, and an array of children’s activities.
The celebrity appearance and signing session has become a Festival marquee event and the dream destination for autograph seekers of all ages. Headlining this year’s list of celebrity guests expected to attend is the “First Lady of Racing”, Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery and Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, as well as exercise rider Charlie Davis and author Bill Nack.
