Rare and Archival Fine Art
For the Secretariat enthusiast who enjoys seeing Big Red represented in fine art form, we are proud to present Secretari-ART, featuring rare and archival fine art pieces currently available for purchase.
Our newest feature in the Secretari-ART Gallery is the bronze work by artist and sculptor Edwin Bogucki, whom Penny Chenery commissioned to create the life-sized statue of Secretariat that stands at the entrance of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
Edwin Bogucki (1932-2021)
A soft-spoken but passionate man with a reputation as one of the finest artists of his generation, Edwin Bogucki was gifted with an innate curiosity about the world around him and an unparalleled artistic talent. These qualities became the cornerstone of a career that spanned more than 55 years. His body of work reflects a lifelong pursuit of realism seen through the eyes of an artist dedicated to capturing the vibrancy of the equine form. The consummate artist, Bogucki insisted on doing the majority of his equine work himself. From concept to finish, the sculpting, mold making, wax casting, welding, grinding, and patinating was done in-house.
Bogucki’s bronze Thoroughbred monuments are familiar to racing fans across the globe. His work includes the aformentioned monument of Secretariat at the Kentucky Horse Park as well as the breathtaking “Against All Odds” showcasing the stirring stretch battle of John Henry and The Bart was prominently displayed at Arlington Park and now resides at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York.
"Secretariat" 1/3 Life-Sized Bronze Original Artist Proof Maquette
The historical significance of this magnificent bronze is manifested in its life-sized counterpart that resides at the entrance of the Kentucky Horse Park and is seen by thousands of visitors each year. When Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery first saw Bogucki's initial 1/3 size portrayal of her 1973 Triple Crown winner depicted along with jockey Ron Turcotte and groom Eddie Sweat, she was so enamored with the piece that she personally commissioned Bogucki to recreate the moment in life-sized form as an enduring tribute to the chestnut champion and his invaluable Meadow team connections.
It should be noted that Bogucki often reminisced about personally meeting Turcotte and especially Sweat during his initial research for the sculpt. There had been a strong connection between the artist and the devoted groom, and with Sweat's passing in 1998, it always bothered Bogucki that this unassmuming horseman would never get to see the finished life-sized monument, as it was not completed and installed at the Horse Park until 2004.
Featured here is the magnificent bronze maquette from the Bogucki family's personal collection, which served as the artist proof for the Horse Park monument endeavor. Cast in 2000, there are subtle changes throughout the piece that uniquely differ from the original version first cast nine years earlier. Most noticeably, this final proof piece does not include a crop in jockey Ron Turcotte's hand. After speaking with the famed rider, Bogucki decided not to include it as Turcotte shared he had likely handed it off prior to dismounting. Other changes include those to the lead and reins, which are looped slightly differently in Eddie Sweat's and Turcotte's hands respectively. All told there would be five 1/3 scale pieces created in the exclusive edition — this final artist's proof piece and the long sold out four cast in 1991, with the most recent being resold for $70,000 in the Nov. 18, 2023 Sporting Art Auction.
This breathtaking bronze is prominently featured in BOGUCKI - Capturing The Vibrancy of Life, published in 2026, and measures 31.5" tall x 43.5" long x 19.5" deep.
Accompanying the proof piece is the artist's own companion bronze presentation medallion featuring the sculpted profile of Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery. The circular medallion is an exact match of the medallion adorning the brick base as part of the Horse Park monument installation, and measures 8" in diameter.

"I believe I’m here to create something that I think is beautiful. If it survives the ages because someone else thought it was beautiful too, my efforts will have been worthwhile.”
