Secretari-ART

Rare and Archival Fine Art

For the Secretariat enthusiast who enjoys seeing Big Red represented in fine art form, we are proud to present Secretari-ART, featuring rare and archival fine art pieces currently available for purchase.

Our newest feature in the Secretari-ART Gallery is an original painting by Richard Stone Reeves, whom many consider to be the finest American equine artist of the 20th Century. This rare, never-before-published piece is being made available on the art market for the first time as part of the upcoming Sporting Art Gallery Auction at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.

Richard Stone Reeves (1919-2005)

Richard Stone Reeves is considered to be the 20th century’s premier racing portraitist and perhaps the most important American painter of sporting art ever. Known for his accuracy and realism, Reeves’ ability to capture the personality and character of each subject was legendary. Over the decades, Reeves was commissioned to paint more international Thoroughbred champions than any artist in history. His original paintings are housed in some of the world’s finest galleries and private collections. Seven books and over 50 prints have been published of his art and storied career. Mr. Reeves died at the age of 85 in October of 2005, leaving a timeless legacy of artistic excellence.

"Somethingroyal and Secretariat in 1970" Original Painting

Original Richard Stone Reeves paintings are among the most coveted pieces in both the fine art and racing communities. And original Reeves paintings of Secretariat are considered among the highest echelon of his work. As one of his favorite subjects, Reeves painted the illustrious 1973 Triple Crown champion just a precious few times throughout the artist's illustrious career.

To our knowledge, on only three prior occasions has a never-before-published Reeves original painting of Secretariat been offered for sale on the public market… until now! The existence and surprise discovery of this previously unknown privately commissioned piece is setting the art world abuzz.

It is believed "Somethingroyal and Secretariat in 1970" marks the artist's only depiction of the 1973 Triple Crown champion as a foal. As testament to Secretariat's blue-blooded birthright, the painting depicts the chestnut son of Bold Ruler and his famed dam Somethingroyal amid the pastoral backdrop of the Meadow Farm in Doswell, Virginia. Painted during the height of Reeves' prolific career, the magnificent framed piece measures 29” x 35” in total and must be considered among the artist's finest works.

The painting (Lot 69) was recently auctioned as part of the 2025 Sporting Art Auction at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion, with the total price fetching an impressive $85,188. The annual auction represents a collaboration between the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house and Cross Gate Gallery — the country’s leading gallery of fine equine art. In keeping with Keeneland's sporting and philanthropic mission, a portion of the auction proceeds benefited the association’s non-profit initiatives, including the Keeneland Library Foundation.

"From all perspectives Secretariat was the very essence of the ideal Thoroughbred."
