Secretariat.com Changes
In 2002, Secretariat.com launched “out of the gate and into history” as the first website solely dedicated to a singular Thoroughbred racehorse. In collaboration with Secretariat’s late owner Penny Chenery, the website established itself as the definitive source for information and products pertaining to the history of the famed 1973 Triple Crown winner. After more than two decades of serving Big Red fans, and culminating in last year’s lauded 50th Anniversary celebration tour, the contractual relationship with Ms. Chenery’s family has now ended, prompting several changes for the website. While Secretariat.com‘s operation and dedication to fans will continue, it will no longer be designated as the official website representing the Meadow Stable champion nor manufacturing and releasing officially licensed products.
Despite the impending changes, Secretariat.com will maintain its commitment to sharing historical information and news about Secretariat’s legend and legacy, and will continue its mission to celebrate Thoroughbred racing’s past by remembering its heroes. It will also strive to enhance awareness in the sport, engaging the participation of existing fans and sparking the interest of new ones.
So what does this mean for Secretariat fans and visitors to the site? Following Secretariat’s March 30 birthday celebration, the website will temporarily undergo reconstruction to relaunch in a new format. During this down time, Secretariat.com will provide updates and announcements primarily via social media and the monthly e-newsletter, and the weekly Derby Rankings and commentary from award-winning columnist Steve Haskin will continue unabated.
The Classic Merchandise store will remain open and continue to serve fans as the one-stop shop for authentic and original racing memorabilia including programs, tickets and glassware, as well as books, photography and various items autographed by jockey Ron Turcotte. Secretariat.com also will continue to represent Mr. Turcotte with offerings from his private collection of memorabilia and broker the personal artifacts from the collections of exercise riders Jimmy Gaffney and Charlie Davis, writer Bill Nack, and Ms. Chenery’s sister Margaret Carmichael. However, the forthcoming changes will precipitate the discontinuation of the majority of our products in the licensed categories of apparel and collectibles. Secretariat.com will remain committed to its original vision shared with Ms. Chenery in assisting the racing community, and a variety of future offerings are expected to benefit equine-related charities and non-profit organizations.
During this transition, we remain accessible to all inquiries and questions through our same address and phone contact information for our Kentucky offices. We appreciate your patience and consideration while the website undergoes these significant changes. On behalf of our entire team, thank you for your continued interest and affection for Secretariat and the sport of Thoroughbred racing.
