Description
Secretariat collectors and Kentucky Derby history lovers, this is for you! We are delighted to offer a very small quantity of the original 1973 Kentucky Derby Media Guide published by Churchill Downs in conjunction with 99th running of the legendary race. The guides were produced annually, specifically for use by newspapers, radio, and television broadcasting stations to assist in their Derby coverage, and the 1973 guide is especially coveted as an original piece of Kentucky Derby ephemera pertaining to the year of Secretariat’s record-breaking performance. Not only would the chestnut colt win the 1 ¼-mile race in its fastest time ever, he would then go on to achieve track record-victories in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes to become the sport’s newest Triple Crown champion. Additionally, the color cover of the guide features Secretariat’s older Meadow stablemate — Riva Ridge — winner of the 1972 Kentucky Derby.
The 161-page soft-cover guide is chock full of Kentucky Derby information and a comprehensive condensed history of the race’s winning horses, jockeys, owner, trainer, and breeders ever to participate in the race prior to its 1973 running. The guide also offers detailed listings regarding Derby winners’ colors, sires, post positions, fastest runnings, status of prior winners, Derby Day wagering, weather and post-time favorites, as well as the official race chart for each running dating back to the inaugural Derby, run in 1875 and won by Aristides.
