The Oct. 8, 1973 Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park represented Secretariat’s first racing venture on grass. How did the Meadow Stable colt nicknamed Big Red (like the namesake of the prestigious turf race) adapt to the challenge of the change in surface? By handily winning the 1 ½ mile race by 5 lengths in the sizzling time of 2:24 4/5, setting a new course record in the process! For the serious Secretariat memorabilia enthusiast, we are delighted to offer a very limited number of these nearly impossible-to-find official track programs in perfect and pristine mint condition.
Often overlooked in this magnificent performance is the stellar field of accomplished older horses and stakes winners that Secretariat defeated in the race, including the 4-year-old multiple stakes-winning turf specialists Big Spruce and Tentam. The race also represented the final time Secretariat’s Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte would be aboard the champion, who according to Turcotte’s pronouncement after the race, was “10 lengths better on grass.”
We offer these original programs crisp and pristine — exactly as they were issued over a half century ago. For those who prefer your collectible memorabilia autographed, programs may be available with the option of being hand-signed by Mr. Turcotte. For the most discerning Secretariat collector, we also offer the associated uncashed original $2.00 winning pari-mutuel ticket for the race. Available on a first-come basis, but only while quantities last.
