These magnificent limited-edition portraits by acclaimed equine artist Jaime Corum depict two of the most talented and beloved horses of this century — Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. Although they never met on the track, their racing dominance in 2009 and 2010 resulted in each being named Horse of the Year. Showcasing a gorgeous mixture of light and shadow, Corum’s exquisite dual portraits capture the regal bearing of both of these female phenoms whose legacies continue to hold the hearts of their respective devoted fans.
Rachel Alexandra exhibited excellence early in her career and rocketed into the spotlight in her 3-year-old season with an amazing 20-length victory in the 2009 Kentucky Oaks. Two weeks later she followed up that effort as the favorite in the Preakness Stakes, defeating a field of 12 colts, including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Throughout that summer, her popularity continued to soar after again beating the boys in the Haskell and Woodward Stakes. Those efforts culminated in Rachel Alexandra being named 2009 Horse of the Year and ultimately accumulating an amazing $3,506,730 in career earnings with 13 victories in 19 total starts.
Zenyatta will long be remembered for her thrilling come-from-behind victories over a four-year span in a near perfect racing career consisting of 19 wins in 20 lifetime starts. With a magnificent physical presence matched only by her charming demeanor, her abundance of achievements included an undefeated racing campaign and victory in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic, becoming the first and only mare to win the prestigious race. Zenyatta returned to competition the following year to win the Santa Margarita, Apple Blossom, Vanity Handicap, Clement L. Hirsch and Lady’s Secret stakes before finishing second by a diminishing head in that year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic that many consider to be her most impressive and valiant performance. Zenyatta retired with total career earnings of an astounding $7,304,580 and was named 2010 Horse of the Year and selected as the inaugural Secretariat “Vox Populi” Award winner.
