Secretariat’s Champion Son

Description

In 1988, Richard Stone Reeves painted Secretariat’s most famous and accomplished son Risen Star. In his 3-year-old championship season, Risen Star won the Louisiana Derby and Lexington Stakes before embarking on the Triple Crown trail. Aftert running a troubled third behind Winning Colors in the Kentucky Derby, Risen Star avenged his loss, capturing the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the latter by nearly 15 lengths in the time of 2:26 2/5 — the second fastest running at the time, behind only his legendary father.

The artist captured the massive dark bay colt in a classic conformation pose against the backdrop of Fairgrounds Race Course, his home base in New Orleans, Louisiana. The lower margin gives evidence to his regal heritage with the portrait remarques of Secretariat on the left, and grandsire Bold Ruler on the right. The fine art lithograph measuring approximately 23″ x 27″ was published by the Racing Scene Gallery in a long-since sold out edition of 850 total pieces, each hand-numbered and signed by the artist.
