Description

The most coveted and collectible limited-edition lithograph in Reeves’ prolific career is his first-edition print of Secretariat, immediately released following Secretariat’s record-breaking victories in the 1973 Triple Crown. With its exquisite coloring and museum grade art stock, the edition set the benchmark for lithographic excellence. Reproduced from the original painting (now residing in the National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg, VA), the artist captured Secretariat and his perfect conformation amidst a rural backdrop reminiscent of the sweeping pastures of his birth and early youth at the Meadow in Doswell, Virginia.

In addition to the historic acclaim of its subject, the print commands the highest of demand due to the autographed remarques in the lower margin corners. The left remarque depicting Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes is accompanied by the incredibly rare original signature of his Hall of Fame trainer Lucien Laurin, while the right remarque features Secretariat’s Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte and his original signature as well.

Richard Stone Reeves is considered to be the 20th century’s premier racing portraitist and perhaps the most important American painter of sporting art ever. Known for his accuracy and realism, Reeves’ ability to capture the personality and character of each subject was legendary. Over the decades, Reeves was commissioned to paint more international Thoroughbred champions than any artist in history. His original paintings are housed in some of the world’s finest galleries and private collections. Seven books and over 50 prints have been published of his art and storied career. Mr. Reeves died at the age of 85 in October of 2005, leaving a timeless legacy of artistic excellence.

It is important to note that only the inaugural print edition, published by the Newmarket Gallery in 1973 in a total edition of 850 pieces, features the signature of the artist in addition to the two signatures mentioned above. Measures approximately 24″ x 26″ and available framed or unframed.
