Back to Business

Description

We are delighted to debut the newest release in the Steve Haskin collection of never-before-published photos. This limited edition photo titled “Back to Business” captures Secretariat in the Belmont barn area as he prepares for a morning work.

This photo was taken on a dreary April morning when Secretariat was to have his final serious work for the Wood Memorial, which was to propel him to heavy favoritism in the Kentucky Derby. What I like most about this shot is having Big Red’s owner Penny Chenery, trainer Lucien Laurin, jockey Ron Turcotte, and groom Eddie Sweat all in the photo. You can feel the anticipation mounting, just wanting to get the work out of the way. In the background are several journalists and cameraman taking note. Little did anyone know the history of Thoroughbred racing was about to be rewritten. ~SH
