Autographed Special Offering
Description
We are delighted to celebrate Secretariat’s exercise rider Charlie Davis with this distinctive photo. The image documents an appearance between races on Travers day at Saratoga in the summer of 1973 following Secretariat’s historic record-breaking Triple Crown sweep. The photograph bears testament to Big Red’s popularity, so much so that the management of the New York Racing Association allowed this singular public gallop to take place during the afternoon race card. Secretariat and Charlie did their part, delighting the multitude of fans assembled in hopes of getting a glimpse of the heralded chestnut colt as he was showcased through the length of the stretch.
The photo is special for several reasons. First, it captures one of the proudest moments in the life of Mr. Davis, when he had the opportunity to adorn the famed blue and white Meadow Racing Stable silks and bask in the limelight aboard Secretariat in front of thousands of adoring fans. Second, following Mr. Davis’ passing in 2018, only a handful of these photos hand-signed by Davis in his distinctive block print remain available. Finally, the image was produced in an oversized large format of 16” x 20” limited-edition numbered pieces and this offering represents the very last few pieces that were additionally personalized “Secretariat – 19.73” by the talented horsemen.
