This rare original press photo captures the thrilling finish between Buckpasser and Abe’s Hope in the 1966 Flamingo Stakes. Dubbed the “Chicken Flamingo” due to the overwhelming favoritism of the Phipps entry of Buckpasser and Stupendous, Hialeah track management made the controversial decision to turn the race into a wagerless exhibition event despite the contest’s nine-horse field. Buckpasser’s nose decision over Abe’s Hope allowed the track to escape the potential huge embarrassment and bettor’s fury that would have ensued had the Phipps Stable superstar not claimed victory in the last jump at the wire.

The 8” x 10” glossy period photo features the dueling colts along with the caption that reads:
“March 3 — BUCKPASSER WINS THE FLAMINGO BY A NOSE — Buckpasser (2) with jockey Willie Shoemaker wins by a nose over Abe’s Hope (4) with jockey Earlie Fires in the no wagering $100,000 Added Flamingo today at Hialeah Park….”
