Description

With the $50,000 added Gotham Stakes run on April 7, 1973 at Aqueduct, a new facet of Secretariat was unveiled when he was immediately sent to the lead in the one mile race, as opposed to his typical powerful closing rush. Although the tactic was different, the end result was the same. Secretariat never looked back, winning by three lengths over his familiar adversary Champagne Charlie and equaling the track record for the distance in the amazing time of 1:33 2/5. This new dimension of versatility only added to the chestnut colt’s arsenal of vast talent and growing reputation as a super horse.

Featured in this official New York Racing Association composite photo are the Meadow Stable constants; jockey Ron Turcotte, trainer Lucien Laurin, and groom Eddie Sweat, with exercise rider Charlie Davis seen peeking out beneath Secretariat’s neck. Joining owner Penny in the winners circle are her siblings Hollis Chenery and Margaret Carmichael, as well as long-time Meadow secretary Elizabeth Ham. Making the trophy presentation is none other than the great 2-time Triple Crown winning Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Arcaro.

Like all imagery associated with Secretariat’s races prior to the Triple Crown, the Gotham Stakes winner’s photo is a very scarce and highly sought after collectible. This image represents Big Red’s last winners circle photo prior to the Kentucky Derby when his exposure to the general public and popularity would exponentially soar. This historic photo may be available with the option of being hand-signed by jockey Ron Turcotte, please inquire upon purchase. Measures 8″ x 10″ with larger sizes available by special order.
